Blog Catch-up: Victorian Festival

on April 25, 2011

Every January, our city puts on a Victorian Festival.  People from all over the city and surrounding areas dress up and put on a show.   The rest of us show up to wander around the different booths and vendors and just enjoy a free outing downtown.  There are always so many cool things to see, but unfortunately I didn’t take many pictures.  Not only did we manage to see Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert, carolers singing songs from the animated Grinch, some really cool hand-bound books, an original gatling gun, a hatter, and a potter (as in he throws pots) with some really cool stuff.  Man, it was beautiful!  We could have easily spent like $300 there, but didn’t spend anything because the point of the outing was that it was free.

One of the coolest things we say, and which would have accounted for a good portion of that $300 pretend dollars, was The Village Block Smith.  Not only was he selling the most amazing handmade castle blocks, but he had a dozen or so little tables and benches set out so people could just sit and play with his blocks.  Really, just so to his site and look at his blocks and tell me they don’t look like fun.  Miss E and her daddy sure thought so:

I found it quite entertaining that most of the tables were taken by adults, with a sprinkling of children thrown in.  Fun for all ages, I guess.  Seriously, they were some amazing blocks.  And, the Block Smith’s business card was…get this, a block.  So clever.

So, all in all, it was a fun day in January.  Hopefully we’ll get to go again next year and see what other things there are to tell tales of.
