One cannot have the traditional Haren Easter breakfast of Goldonrod Eggs on Toast without hard-boiled eggs. And one cannot continue the smashing eggs game (does it actually have a name?) without colored eggs. So, Miss E and I set off to color some eggs.
Lesson #1 – I’m not shopping at all right now. Haven’t been to a store in weeks. So, whatever we needed to dye eggs had to be on hand already. Enter the food coloring, vinegar, and stickers.
Lesson #2 – Stickers don’t stick well to cold eggs. If you plan on using stickers to keep the dye away from certain areas, don’t try to stick them onto cold eggs that you hard-boiled the day before. Please let your eggs get to room temperature first, your nearly 4-year-old will last longer that way.
Lesson #3 – Don’t tell your daughter that the 2 eggs she drew on with white crayon are “magic eggs” when she didn’t really press hard enough to leave any wax behind. There won’t be much magic…
Lesson #4 – Hard-boil more eggs than you think you need. There is bound to be at least one casualty. We started with 8 eggs and ended with 7. The 8th tasted great…
Once we did get the eggs prepped and the water heated, Miss E had great fun watching the white egg go into the colored water and come out colored a few minutes later. She had fun drying them and watching me peel the stickers off to reveal the white designs underneath. Hers is obviously hot pink with butterflies, she decided that the baby would be green with stars, Daddy would be blue and Mommy purple. The yellow eggs received some fun white polka dots and the non-magic eggs ended up just pink and blue. But, she had fun. She even commented that we haven’t done an “activity” in a while, which is true. I’m glad she enjoyed it and I can’t wait to be back to where we can do such fun things more often.

She looks very proud! =)
